Chancellor’s Associates Scholars

IT’S OFFICIAL…we’ve fulfilled the Silberman Inspiration Challenge, raising a matched $1 million in under a year! What an outstanding philanthropic feat, with our deepest thanks to Karen and Jeff Silberman, for their leadership, and to all who participated in this tremendous drive in support of our scholars.

The Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship program was established in 2013 by Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla to improve the pathway for all qualified students to achieve a higher education. Made possible with funding from Chancellor’s Associates, the scholarship program ensures the university can meet one of its most urgent needs and critical priorities — ensuring access and affordability to UC San Diego for local students.

570 scholars from across the region and greater California have attended UC San Diego, thanks to the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship. Since the program’s inception, there has been a 600% increase in Chancellor’s Associates Scholarships – with 200 awards awaiting funding.

About the Scholarship

Through the Chancellor’s Associates Scholarship program, the university provides $10,000 a year for four years at UC San Diego to each eligible student. When combined with the University of California’s Blue + Gold Opportunity Plan—which covers fees for California residents whose families earn less than $80,000 a year and qualify for financial aid—the scholarships effectively provide a full-ride to UC San Diego.

Why the Scholarship was Established

UC San Diego is committed to our local community and the promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion. These scholarships strengthen our efforts to enroll highly qualified local students who will become our future leaders and innovators.

Who can be a Chancellor's Associates Scholar?

The program serves students from Gompers Preparatory Academy, Lincoln High School and The Preuss School UCSD, as well as eligible community college transfer students from San Diego City College, Southwestern College and Imperial Valley College. Since the program’s founding, it has been expanded to include more high-achieving students with financial need, including students from several community-based organizations that help underserved populations, as well as California students enrolled in federally recognized tribes.

This year, we had 206 new Chancellor’s Associates Scholars – a record-setting surge, with 144 incoming freshmen and 62 transfer students, from diverse, underserved areas of our city and state. Awarding $10,000 per year toward the cost of education, including housing and books, our scholarships level the playing field for these youths, who are often the first in their family to attend college.
